Medical Conditions and Your Mental Health

When living with a chronic medical condition, such as diabetes or cancer, your mental health may be low on your priority list. It is easy to let depression and anxiety sit on the back burner when faced with a concerning diagnosis, but physical well-being and mental health are inextricably linked. Because of this, it is vital to care for your whole self. If you are dealing with a debilitating, chronic, or fatal medical condition, it is important to also consider your mental health.

Mental healthcare is an important aspect of treating your whole body. How you feel emotionally can have an impact on your body’s physical health too. It may not be enough to treat your physical symptoms alone. By helping you tackle your physical and emotional symptoms together, we can help you work towards improving your quality of life.

Cancer and Mental Health Conditions

One of the most terrifying words you can hear from a doctor is cancer, and understandably, mental distress is common among patients. Dealing with a scary diagnosis and aggressive treatments can take a lot out of you. In many cases, chemotherapy and radiation treatments can be almost as emotionally draining. Depression and anxiety during treatment are fairly common. Even while in remission, your mental health can be important to take care of.

Diabetes and Mental Health

For chronic medical conditions like diabetes, your mental health can have a profound impact on your quality of care. Untreated mental health problems can exacerbate diabetes symptoms. Changes in eating habits caused by depression can hurt your sugar management. According to the CDC, diabetics are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from depression than people without the condition.

Chronic Pain Conditions

Pain is a pretty universal experience. Every person has experienced pain and had to push through it to meet their responsibilities, but most pain is temporary. Dealing with chronic pain from an injury or a health condition, such as Arthritis or Fibromyalgia, can affect your overall mental health. Pain, fatigue, and brain fog from your condition can contribute to declining mental health. We can’t erase your pain, but we can help you reduce some of the mental load you’re constantly carrying.

Medical Disabilities and Your Emotional Health

Diagnosed disabilities, either from injury or birth, can lead to lifelong physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Furthermore, physical disabilities can create barriers to accessing care. We provide both in-person and telemedicine appointments to patients. Our office is in a handicap-accessible building. It is important to us that patients can receive the care they need, no matter what.
